How to Apply Window Tint Film (Infographic)

Window tints are essential to make a car look and feel sporty; it helps create a sleek profile while maximising privacy. Thus, making the drive more stylish. Furthermore, window tints keep out the sun’s UV rays – ideal for traveling with children and maintaining the car’s temperature.

If your car’s windows are not tinted, adding them can be an option. Here are six steps on how to apply window tint to your car’s windows.

Necessary Tools

  • A heat gun
  • Craft or Stanley knife
  • A spray water bottle
  • Metal file (for finishing)
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Squeegee
  • Window razor

Step 1

First, clean the interior glass where you intend to apply the film – dedicate a car window cleaning product to remove grease, marks, and smears. Once the window is clean, use a squeegee and window razor to remove extra moisture and dry the glass.

Step 2

Spray the glass with water – it holds the film gently. Furthermore, it makes the film adjustable and cuttable to the size without pressing it awkwardly against the glass.

Next, cut the film by pressing it into the window recess and trimming it with a knife. The window frames have linear patterns – follow the lines to cut it as precisely as possible. Plus, round off the corners to prevent peeling. Don’t forget to wind down the window slightly – it makes sure the film is in the right shape.

Step 3

By using a heat gun, you will be able to shape the film according to the size and shape of the window. Heat allows the film to stretch and reshape with ease, primarily if you use a piece of plastic to mould it into corners.

Once the film is in the right shape, gently remove it from the glass. If you’re going to lay it down, spray the surface with water; it prevents the film from sticking.

Step 4

Removing the backing and spray down the film with clean water – it keeps the film as moist as possible. Thus, making it easier to adjust and move into place on the glass as it sticks firmly and ensuring the perfect fit.

Step 5

Using a plastic card, carefully press the film to the inside of the window to push it to the corners. It would be best if you worked your way from the middle outward – forcing the air towards the edges. To keep the film pliable, use the heat gun to remove all the creases and air pockets. However, don’t forget to apply it to the outside of the glass to avoid the film from melting.

Step 6

To ensure a smooth, rounded finish, use a metal file on the edge of the window – preventing the film from becoming unstuck when the window moves up or down.

Additional tips

When applying the tinting film to the rear window or windscreen, roll it onto the glass from one side to the other for a more straightforward application. Furthermore, give the film time to cure and set. Hence, avoid winding the windows down or using wipers for two days after application.

It is possible to apply window films by yourself. However, it’s a crucial task. While doing it yourself is cheaper, one mistake can turn all your efforts into nothing. In worse cases, it may cost you even more.
