However, factory-fitted tints are designed to meet global manufacturing standards, and not the realities of UK driving. They may satisfy baseline regulations, but they are not engineered for the UK’s light conditions and year-round ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
What Is a Factory Tint?
Factory window tint is a dye or pigment built directly into the glass during manufacturing, thus a permanent part of the window. In the UK, factory tint typically achieves around 15%– 20% visible light transmission (VLT).
While factory-installed tints resemble aftermarket car auto tints visually, they primarily provide privacy through dyed glass. They do not protect against heat and radiation as effectively as their aftermarket counterparts.
Why Factory Window Tint Isn’t Enough
All automotive glass blocks harmful UVB rays, but not UVA rays. These penetrate standard and tempered glass easily, with side windows transmitting 70% UVA due to the lack of UV-absorbent interlayers found in laminated windscreens. Factory tint in rear windows can block 55% to 70% of UVA, which is a modest improvement, but still allows 30% to 45% of UVA to pass through. For effective protection, car windows must ideally reject 99% of UVA.
Factory tint also offers limited heat rejection. Its infrared (IR) blocking typically falls between 20% and 40%, and total solar energy rejection (TSER) only averages 20% to 30%. This allows near-infrared (NIR) light, which carries around half of the sun’s heat, to still pass through easily. While the glass may appear darker, its thermal performance remains largely unchanged, as the dye absorbs a portion of visible light but does not reflect or dissipate IR energy efficiently.
As a result, heat is absorbed by interior surfaces and raises cabin temperatures, even when the car is parked. This is why vehicles with factory privacy glass can still reach interior temperatures exceeding 50°C within an hour or two on mild UK summer days.
Can Factory Tint Be Upgraded With Window Film?
Yes, factory-tinted glass can be upgraded with aftermarket tint film. Unlike factory dye, these films actively reflect and dissipate energy rather than just darkening the glass. Modern window films now use ceramic or nano-carbon technology to block up to 99% of UVA. Top‑end automotive window films also have TSER figures of 55% to 63% and can reflect IR by up to 95%.
When applied over a factory-tinted window, the film may reduce the light already passing through the glass—this is dependent on the VLT percentage of the window film. Therefore, if a factory-tinted front side window has an 80% VLT, installing a 90% VLT aftermarket film allows 90% of the remaining light that penetrates the factory-tinted glass to pass through. This results in a combined VLT of 72%, which is within the UK’s legal limits for front-side windows.

It is also not advisable to install lower-VLT aftermarket window tints on a factory-tinted car window that already has a 75% VLT. This can lead to a very dark window—for instance, applying a window film with 80% VLT over a 75% VLT factory tint results in a 60% final VLT, which is below the legal limits for both the front windscreen and front side windows.
Meanwhile, there is no legal minimum VLT for rear windows and the rear windscreen on most private vehicles. This means you can upgrade them however you want or need. However, the window tinting rules are stricter for front side windows and the windscreen.
