Reasons You Shouldn’t Tint Your Car Yourself

Be it for health, security, safety, comfort, and privacy, many people are choosing to have their car windows tinted because of the number of benefits it provides not only the driver but also their passengers.

Regardless of your reasons, the most important part of the process is the installation of the tint films themselves. Consumers usually have two options for tinting their cars windows: Do it themselves with a DIY window-tinting kit or hire a professional.

With all the available DIY Car Tinting kits offered in the market today, it is tempting to just tint your car by yourself and just wing it. Many think that opting to just tint their car windows themselves at home can help them save money, instead of having it professionally tinted.

But, professional car window tinting companies exist for a reason. Although a DIY window tint project is initially cheaper, here are some reasons why you shouldn’t tint your car yourself:

You’re not familiar with the tinting laws

Let’s face it. Not every citizen of the United Kingdom is knowledgeable of all the laws. Some car owners might be surprised hearing that the government is specific when it comes to laws concerning car tinting.

According to the law, the tinting percentage—or the level of darkness of the front side windows and windscreens are determined by the time when the car is initially used. When a vehicle was first used on April 1, 1985 and later, the front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through.

On the other hand, vehicles that were used before April 1, 1985 should have its windscreen and front side windows must both let at least 70% of light through.

Corresponding penalties for having wrongly tinted windows are also being implemented by the authorities. Violators can get a prohibition notice on the road, a penalty notice and even a court summon.

Just to be safe, it would be best to have your car professionally tinted because companies who do this for a living know the do’s and don’ts, with considerations of the regulations. Most professional window tinting companies make it their business to say up to date on window tint regulations.

You can’t identify high quality tint films

What makes a tint film ‘high quality’? As a regular non-professional car window tint applicator, you probably have no idea how to identify good tint finds from overpriced-yet-low-quality ones in the market. Chances are, you grab the first one you see, the recommendation of the sales person or believe the claims of it in the label.

The catch is, you will only know the quality of the film you bought until you have already installed it and after quite some time. If you picked one that was easy to install and that lasted for quite a long time, then congratulations, you did get lucky.

But, with all the hassle of installing, removing, re-installing, should you risk it? Better have it professionally done.

You might ruin it.

Let’s be honest, do you have any idea how hard window tinting may be? No matter how great you think you are in just winging things, the odds of you ruining it are higher, especially in a task when restarting is not an option.

Your first trial would most probably be a disaster. So, chances are you will try again and reapply another tint. You thought that it would be easier, but removing window film is much more difficult than applying it, due in part to the sticky adhesive used to apply it to the auto glass. Once window tinting film has been applied to a window, it cannot be taken off and simply returned to the store. Starting from scratch would probably require you to buy a new kit.

You won’t get any guarantees

One of the reasons why professional car tinting is relatively more expensive than DIY kits is the quality product and service you can get. More so, the reputation and credibility of the company is also a factor, especially if they always get great reviews and feedback from previous customers.

If a professional window tinting company does a bad job, car owners can always demand re-tinting. Also, some companies offer after care services that is included in the installation fee.
