How Do Tint Percentages Work?
Choosing what kind of tint to use for your car is already challenging, but choosing the correct tint percentages may be relatively more difficult if you don’t understand how it works. Tints are used to deliver additional eye protection so the driver can drive comfortably, so you must be thinking, “the darker tint, the better,”; but that doesn’t work that way.
In choosing your car window tint percentage, you may want your windows to be dark enough to protect your eyes from the sun glares but light enough to keep the roads clear and visible. In order to achieve this, you must know how window tint percentages work.
The darkness of window tints is measured by the percentage of how much light can pass through your windows. This is called Visible Light Transmission or VLT. The lower the percentage VLT is, the darker your tint is.
For instance, an 80% VLT means 80% light will be visible through the film. Meanwhile, a 10% VLT tint will permit a lower quantity of light to pass through your windows.
Measuring Window Tint Darkness
To measure your tint’s darkness, you have to have a tint scale or window tint meter, or you can simply go to your local window tinting company and have your car window tints’ VLT percentage checked.
Before you measure your tint’s darkness, you have to make sure that your windows are cleaned and free of any dirt as this might cause inaccuracies on the tint test. All you have to do is to roll your window halfway down and place the meter onto the partially opened window. The meter will have a slot that slides onto the window.
The device will then show a digital display of the exact VLT percentage of your window tint. Ensure that you check your tint’s percentage with law enforcement to determine whether the VLT is allowed within your state.
